Songwriter Jim Kreuger uses rhythmic compounding to replicate the height of disagreement in a relationship. Originally recorded by Dave Mason, Glen Harrell’s smooth vocals take these lyrics to new heights.

Harrell says, “‘We Just Disagree’ is one of my favorite songs from my childhood growing up around Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This song has such a great melody, I always thought it would make a great bluegrass song. ‘We Just Disagree’ is about two people who, no matter what they do, just can’t seem to make it work. In the end, they decide not to give it another try; they know they will end up with the same result. “

The track features Glen Harrell on fiddle and lead vocal, Jacob Burleson on guitar and harmony vocal, Aaron Ramsey on mandolin and harmony vocal, Chris Wade on banjo, Jacob Eller on bass, and Jeff Partin on resophonic guitar.

For more information about Volume Five, visit volumefivebg.com or mountainfever.com.

Volume Fivetag:volumefivebg.com,2005:Post/72938112023-10-20T08:00:00-05:002023-10-26T08:25:50-05:00New Single: You Don't Care For Me Enough To Cry
Willis, VA (October 20, 2023) -- Volume Five is out with a new single, "You Don't Care for Me Enough to Cry," the first release from their upcoming album coming out next year on Mountain Fever Records.
Glen Harrell - Turn up the VolumeFiddler Magazine|Fall 2022

In just a little over 10 years since its formation, Volume Five has become one of the most popular bluegrass bands in the industry. The reason is obvious: distinctive, strong vocals, quality instrumentation, well-chosen bluegrass and gospel songs in its repertoire, and a dedicated leader of the band.Matt Merta

That position is held by vocalist/fiddler Glen Harrell. Since 2008, he has made Volume Five one of the most recognizable names in the bluegrass festival circuit.

This success and recognition did not come easy or out of the blue. Harrell has been working with his fiddle for a number of years in order to create a unique and creative sound in bluegrass. The main ingredient to that sound has been his passion for the music. His early years were spent in Cherokee, Alabama, and though he started out on guitar as a kid, it was his father that motivated him to move toward the fiddle. "My great-grandmother told me she would buy me a fiddle if I would learn to play it," he explains. "At that time it just seemed like something new and fun to do. I had no idea I would come to love it and all the places it would take me throughout life."

Harrell would spend his early music years jamming at relatives' homes and visiting bluegrass festivals with his family. Like most teenagers, he would play with friends and form short-lived bands, although he leaned more toward bluegrass and country projects than the expected rock bands of high schoolers. "When I was about 14 or 15, I started playing with a band around the Muscle Shoals, Alabama, area called Bell Terry and the Alabama Grass.

"At that time the Bluegrass Album Band had just gotten really popular so I listened to a lot of their music. I loved Bobby Hicks' fiddle playing and tried to sit down with a cassette player and learn all the licks I could that he played. He is still one of my all-time favorites." During this time, he was playing a Stradivarius-copy five-string fiddle.

I’m excited to get out and play music with these guys. The songs and musicianship are top shelf,” said Eller.

Jacob Eller joins this exceptionally talented group that includes band leader Glen Harrell on lead vocals and fiddle, Jacob Burleson on guitar and vocals, Aaron Ramsey on mandolin, and Chris Wade on banjo.

Glen Harrell welcomes Jacob Eller to the band, saying, “When Jacob played the first gig with us, I knew he had the groove we were looking for. He’s a very talented guy and fits right in with Volume Five in every aspect. We look forward to playing and recording music with him!”

(August 16, 2022) – Mountain Fever Records proudly announces today’s new single, “Losing My Religion,” by Volume Five. Not to be confused with the R.E.M. hit song, Volume Five’s “Losing My Religion” was written by bluegrass songwriter and musician Josh Miller. This new track includes the award-winning talents of Glen Harrell on lead vocals and fiddle, Jacob Burleson on guitar, Patton Wages on banjo, Aaron Ramsey on mandolin, and Jeff Partin on bass and resophonic guitar, and Josh Shilling on tenor harmony vocals.

Band leader, fiddler, and lead vocalist, Glen Harrell, said, “I was so fortunate to have this song dropped in my lap. Josh Miller is one of my favorite writers and musicians. This song shows how anyone can have their world turned upside down and become hurt so deeply that they doubt everything they know to be true. This is a great song to remind people once again that it rains on the just and the unjust.”

The award-winning Volume Five has a long history of success on the radio charts and garnering other recognition. Several years ago, the band won the IBMA Song of the Year Award for their hit “I Am A Drifter,” In 2021, Mountain Fever Records released “When Karma Comes Calling,” written by Ronnie Bowman and Terry Herd. It was the #1 song six times on the Bluegrass Today Top 20 Weekly Chart and named in the publication’s Top 50 Bluegrass Songs of 2021, even with its late-year release. The track also appeared on the Bluegrass Unlimited National Bluegrass Survey Chart and the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Bluegrass Singles chart. This emotional song was written by Volume Five’s lead vocalist and fiddler, Glen Harrell, after he suffered the devastating loss of both parents in 2019.

Glen shares his thoughts on creating the tune:

“I wrote this tune after losing my dad in a tragic accident while we were working together in August 2019. It brought me to the lowest place I have ever been in my entire life. No matter how much I try to tell myself that it will get easier to cope, the pain is always there. It was even more difficult because I lost my mother to cancer just two months before my dad passed away. Volume Five was performing in California when I got a call that my mom died, and it completely broke my heart that I couldn’t be with her.”

“My parents lived a very simple and modest life. I cherish the memories of sitting on their front porch laughing and having a good time just talking about our lives and what was happening at that time. We have a large family, so we always had cookouts and enjoyed being around each other. When you lose your parents, you always wish you had asked them more questions, listened better when they were talking, told them everything you wanted them to know, and let them know how much you love them. If I had told mine every single day, it would still never be enough.”

“With this song, I just wanted to write something in memory of them and share a little through the lyrics about how losing my dad in the accident truly broke me as a human being. It took the life out of me, and I know I will never be the same. I loved my parents dearly, and I think about them every day. I hope this song will inspire everyone who hears it to take time and visit your mom and dad and spend quality time with them. We all think we will be ready when the time comes, and they leave this world, but I can tell you that even if they live to be 100, you will never be prepared,” said Glen Harrell.

Volume Five, and their fans, suffered another heartbreak when their beloved banjoist Patton Wages suffered a stroke early in 2021, soon after the band’s recording session. Fortunately, Patton continues to improve and keeps fans apprised of his journey. Patton’s one-of-a-kind banjo talents are included on both current singles and will be on all tracks on the upcoming Volume Five album along with former band member Jeff Partin. Current members, Glen Harrell, Jacob Burleson, and Aaron Ramsey are also part of the track and upcoming album.

Glen continues to find solace and happiness in recording and performing with Volume Five, the band he originally formed in Mississippi as a casual jam band in 2008. Today, Volume Five’s sound is instantly recognizable. They have been highly successful on the bluegrass radio charts, including their recent single, “When Karma Comes Calling,” written by Ronnie Bowman and Terry Herd, that reached #1 seven times on the Bluegrass Today Top 20 charts. The publication also included this hit single on the Bluegrass Today’s Top 50 Songs of 2021, even with a late-year release.

(October 29, 2021) –The award-winning band Volume Five debuts at #1 on the Bluegrass Today Weekly Top 20 song chart with their new single, "When Karma Comes Calling." This is the first single release from the band’s upcoming album, Karma scheduled for release next year on Mountain Fever Records.

“When Karma Comes Calling” was recorded earlier this year and includes Glen Harrell, Patton Wages, Jacob Burleson, Aaron Ramsey, Jeff Partin, and Kameron Keller. Volume Five’s fans are thrilled to hear beloved banjo player Patton Wages on this song, as he suffered a stroke soon after the band recorded the tune. Thankfully, Patton continues to improve and fans love to keep up with him on social media.

Volume Five has achieved tremendous chart success for both radio airplay and sales over the years. They appeared in the Top 5 on Billboard's Top Bluegrass Charts for a previous release and at #12 for their latest Mountain Fever Records’ album, For Those Who Care To Listen. In addition, this award-winning band took home the coveted International Bluegrass Music Association's Song of the Year Award for "Drifter" as well as the Emerging Artist of the Year Award in 2017.

Volume Five will perform Thursday, November 18, 2021, at the Station Inn in Nashville, Tennessee, and on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Everett’s Music Barn in Suwanee, Georgia. We have all known Aaron for several years, have worked with him in recording, and he has filled in on mandolin and bass a few times in the past. Over the last few years we have been trying to work it out where Aaron could be a part of the band but it always seemed like when we wanted him to come, he had other obligations, or when he had thought about picking with us we didn’t have a slot open. Well the opportunity for us both finally came around. Aaron is one of the most talented musicians and record producers in this business. He has a great musical mind whether on the stage or in the studio. Not only that but he is a good friend of ours, and its always fun to play music with your buddies. We look forward to creating new music, and him being part of Volume Five," said Glen Harrell.

Milestones is available to radio and consumers today!

Nashville is known as a “10 year town” — indicating it takes a full 10 years to achieve any real success in the music business. And while fans have long been hot on the trail of Volume Five (V5), it’s easily said the industry is finally catching on and wising up. After a full decade of playing thousands of shows and making some of the best records in bluegrass, V5 has hit their stride. In 2017, the IBMA honored V5 with Emerging Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Drifter,” arguably one of the most played tracks of the decade, thus far.

Aptly named, Milestones is the seventh album for V5 on Mountain Fever Records, and is further proof the band knows how to find and record top-notch material. Fellow bluegrasser Jerry Cole gets writer credits for the bookend tracks, "Just Beyond the Window" and "Stoney Hill," both exemplary in setting the tone for the record while closing with the proverbial exclamation point. "Looks Like Losing Love" is written by Ronnie Bowman and Billy Droze, both considered among the elite in their craft. Of the 12 cuts, it's no coincidence the three ballads are co-written by Craig Market who clearly has a knack for weaving words that tug at the heartstrings when teaming up with writers such as Josh Miller, Becky Buller, and Tim Stafford. The albums first single, "Now That's A Song" was written by Bob Minner and Shawn Lane, and has already taken a well-deserved ride on the song charts including multiple weeks on Bluegrass Today's Weekly Songs chart and coming in at #4 on February's Top 20. No doubt, Milestones is a very well-written album, matched perfectly with a band who performs the music the way it was intended.

In the liner notes, Stafford eloquently summarizes V5 and Milestones:

"Volume Five has a very distinct sound that begins with Glen Harrell’s pitch-perfect, rich baritone voice. He has a great emotional range in his singing that allows the band to do a wide variety of songs effectively. The fact that Colby Laney and Jacob Burleson often switch guitar and mandolin seamlessly to create different tones and sounds testifies that Volume Five is one of the top instrumental bands on the circuit. Patton Wages is a groove machine on banjo, and bassist Chris Williamson provides a propulsive, rock-solid foundation. Glen’s fiddling is icing on the cake, as is guest Gaven Largent’s (Dobro) tasteful fills and leads. Jacob already has one of the best mandolin chops in bluegrass, and Colby is an inventive and powerful lead and rhythm guitarist. But this is a vocal band first, even beyond Glen’s powerhouse singing—the harmonies are exquisite as well, wrapping themselves around his lush lead vocals. This is one great bluegrass record.”

"Now That's a Song" is the first single from an upcoming album, Milestones, due early next year.

Founded by Glen Harrell (fiddle & vocals), Volume Five includes the talents of Patton Wages (banjo & vocals), Colby Laney (guitar & vocals), Chris Williamson (bass & vocals), and Jacob Burleson (mandolin & vocals). These five musicians together blend into a band with true and proven staying power. With countless IBMA, SPBGMA, and Dove Award nominations to their credit, the band walked away with IBMA's Emerging Artist of the Year and Song of the Year honors just last month in Raleigh, NC. Their previous album, Drifter, received rave reviews, produced several charting singles, and hit Billboard's Top 5 Best-Selling Bluegrass Albums chart.

With their career moving with in an upward trajectory, Volume Five is coming out of the gate strong with "Now That's A Song," the first single from their new album. "I had been looking for a good uptempo song and contacted Bob Minner to see if he had anything fresh to send me," says Glen Harrell. "This one caught my ear right away and I thought 'now that's a song.' A few moments later, after reaching the chorus, I realized that was actually the title of the song! Bob co-wrote this with Shawn Lane and we think it's a winner!"

With an unexpected, almost subtle dobro kickoff, "Now That's A Song" blazes into a spirited, straight-up bluegrass melody supporting a sweet lyric telling of a long-time love. Harrell's lead vocal moves flawlessly with the words while the makeup of V5 proves exactly why they are turning a genre of music noted for its musical dexterity, on its ear.

Donna Ulisse and Marc Rossi wrote the award-winning song I Am a Drifter when they got together for one of their regular song-writing sessions that, as Ulisse tells us, took place each Monday.

On Thursday, September 28 last, I Am a Drifter was named the winner of the IBMA’s Song of the Year Award for 2017.

The duo’s song-writing abilities were also recognized with I’m Calling Heaven Down, the lead track on Ulisse’s album When I Look Back, winning the Just Plain Folks Awards for Best Bluegrass Song in 2009.

I Am a Drifter started as one type of song, but was completely changed in character and message by the time that it was completed.

Bluegrass Today says "Wages is a thoroughly modern bluegrass banjo player, with a subtle but driving style that should be attractive to any pickers learning to play the instrument. Volume Five's new album, Drifter, will be released June 24th.

Founded by Glen Harrell (fiddle & vocals), Volume Five also includes the talents of Harry Clark (mandolin & vocals), Chris Williamson (bass & vocals), Patton Wages (banjo & vocals, and Colby Laney (guitar & vocals). These five musicians together truly blend into a band with staying power. V5 has proven just that with their previous recordings on Mountain Fever Records. In 2014 they garnered two International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) nominations; Emerging Artist and Gospel Recorded Performance for their album The Day We Learn To Fly. In 2015 they received another nomination for IBMA's Emerging Artist of the Year and a GMA Dove Award Nomination for Bluegrass Song of the Year for "Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man," a song appearing on their Voices album.

"I Am A Drifter" is the first single from their upcoming album and was penned by another well-known bluegrass artist, Donna Ulisse along with Marc Rossi. "When I got the demo of 'I Am A Drifter,' Jerry Salley was singing the vocal," says Harrell. "The first thing that caught my ear was how Jerry began the song with just a guitar and I felt that was so different, and could make for a great lead off cut on an album. Once the melody and lyrics began to meld, I envisioned this as our first single immediately. It seems to have all the ingredients to stand alone as a solid song while also setting the tone for the entire album."

For the uninitiated, that’s pronounced “spig-ma,” which stands for Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America, and serves colloquially as the name of the group’s annual Nashville event. It’s a gathering that’s gotta be seen to be believed, with scores of bluegrassers jamming cheek-by-jowl in the lobby of the Music City Sheraton, just yards away from the city’s only multi-day indoor bluegrass festival. As the jewel in the city’s bluegrass crown, The Station Inn offers jammers too tired to lift a pick opportunities to hear some of their favorites, and these nights are among the year’s best-attended. The Station Inn’s SPBGMA lineup opens and closes with a couple of stalwarts who embody intersecting bluegrass lineages. Both Joe Mullins’ outfit and The Grascals share an enthusiasm for the music of The Osborne Brothers — the Bros. began their career in Mullins’ southwest Ohio stomping grounds and blossomed in The Grascals’ Music City — and though both groups have a distinctive sound, they are in some ways two sides of a very fine coin. Occupying the Station’s Friday night slot is Volume 5, headed by fiddler and lead singer Glen Harrell. Anchored by former Nashvillian Patton Wages’ fierce right hand on the banjo, the group’s gone through a number of changes, each of which has served to further fine-tune its feel for the dead center of today’s bluegrass audience — an approach now ratified by their elevation to one of the SPBGMA weekend’s coveted slots. If you’re planning on catching any of the shows, best get there early. The following day, the band heads to Simply the Best Sports Bar & Grill in Grayson, Ky. for another highly anticipated performance. At both events, VOLUME FIVE will debut their upcoming single, “I Am A Drifter” along with more songs from their Mountain Fever Records album releasing this spring.

The band is led by vocalist and fiddle player, Glen Harrell, who previously toured with Marty Raybon including numerous performances on the Grand Ole Opry. Glen formed VOLUME FIVE eight years ago and has certainly brought together an impressive group of talent with Colby Laney – guitar and vocals, Patton Wages – banjo and vocals, Chris Williamson – bass and vocals, and Harry Clark – mandolin and vocals. As a whole, their talents and personalities prove to be a perfect combination that results in highly entertaining show.

Last fall, VOLUME FIVE was honored with two separate industry nominations – one for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist of the Year, and another nomination for a GMA Dove Award for Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year for “Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man” featuring Rhonda Vincent, written by Dolly Parton and Dorothy Joe Owens.

Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine called their current album VOICES “one of their best albums to date.” The album was released this time last year and many tracks continue to chart on the Bluegrass Today 20 and Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Bluegrass Songs. The song “Going Across the Mountain” is now #1 on the January 2016 Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction’s Most Played Tracks. They’ve hit that top spot several times before when “Dream Softly” reached #1 two months in a row last spring with the album landing at #1 on Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction’s Most Played Albums last April.
Volume Fivetag:volumefivebg.com,2005:Post/40110772015-11-19T16:55:00-06:002018-12-24T14:07:28-06:00New Christmas Single
Volume Five's "Getting Ready For Baby" written by Jerry Salley is now available at iTunes and other retail sites.

Radio programmers down download the song at AirPlay Direct.

Voices is currently #1 on SiriusXM Radio Bluegrass Junction’s Most Played Albums chart, made its debut on the April Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine National Bluegrass Survey Top 15 Album Chart, and is #3 on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Bluegrass Albums this week.Voices is the group’s fifth album and features 12 tracks – five of which are now appearing on a variety of bluegrass radio charts. “Dream Softly” is the #1 song on SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction’s Most Played Tracks this month, #6 on Bluegrass Today’s (BT) Top 20 chart, and #13 on the Roots Music Report this week, along with “Sam’s Gap” at #29. Two other songs appear on this week's Bluegrass Today Top 20 including “Going Across the Mountain” at #5 and “King of California” at #20 with "Faithfully" making its debut last month. “King of California” also moved up five spots this month on the Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine's National Bluegrass Survey Top 30 Song Chart as well.

Media has also raved about the album with recent reviews stating:

“Volume Five has been releasing some of the best new modern traditional bluegrass around for the past several years.” - Bluegrass Today

“Voices — the fifth album the group has released under the Mountain Fever Records label — showcases a blend of bluegrass styles, from traditional to contemporary. The album’s shift from an introspective tune at one moment, to a rousing and robust song the next, is done with incredible finesse. Volume Five can do it all, and with Voices, they do so with the reliability of a train that still, somewhere, comes down Main Street on a regular basis.” - Parchbench

“Voices is bluegrass at full strength. From the opener, an inspired reading of Dave Alvin's folk ballad ‘King of California’ to the closer, the ironically titled ‘Faithfully,’ Volume Five shows its affinity for hard-hitting storytelling songs, while numbers like Amanda’ and ‘Colder and Colder’ resound with bedrock emotional truth. A 21st-century band in the best sense, Volume Five yet remains firmly rooted in tradition, in a fusion of old and new that brings to mind, without imitating, the early Country Gentlemen. Voices fits my definition of a great bluegrass album: one that reminds me why I fell in love with the music all those years ago. If they keep at it at this level, these guys are surely bound for glory.” -- Rambles.Net

“With endorsements from Rhonda Vincent (who supplied guest vocals on one track) and Balsam Range vocalist Buddy Melton, this band has some enthusiastic admirers. Volume Five was nominated for two IBMA awards in 2014 for Emerging Artist of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year. Glen Harrell’s vocals and his accompanying band mates combine for tightknit playing on every one of the twelve songs on this latest release. Although a traditional band, their song selection draws from a variety of contemporary writers. I especially liked “King of California,” “Crazy Night” and “Satan’s Ridge.” Their guitarist Colby Laney wrote the only original tune on the album, a lively instrumental--“Sam’s Gap.” With endorsements from Rhonda Vincent (who supplied guest vocals on one track) and Balsam Ridge vocalist Buddy Melton, this band has some enthusiastic admirers.
